Description:
This unit is designed to introduce the concepts of physics to students whose main area of interest is in either the biological or earth sciences. It will mostly include material from the following: mechanics; energy and power; gases; thermal properties of matter; fluids; dc electricity and nerve conduction; waves, sound and light; optics; photons; atomic physics; radioactivity.

In general, it may not be used as a prerequisite for 200-level physics (except PHYS278).

Assessment is by assignments and examination.

HSC 2-unit physics (1990-94) with an average mark of 60% or greater, HSC 4-unit science (1990-94) with an average mark of 70% or greater, PHYS140, PHYS143, PHYS149, PHYS152 and PHYS153 will not be counted for credit with this unit.

Media and methods employed: Printed text, audio cassettes, residential schools.
Printed correspondence texts prepared by/for institution, tutorial support, audio cassettes, weekend and residential courses. External students may attend the D2 laboratory classes instead of the several on-campus sessions. However such students would also forgo some on-campus lectures and tutorials. Students should have access to a cassette player.
